[NEWS] AKB48 Looks to Taiwan as Group Opens Audition for New Members
During the special Touch The Japan 2015 event, the first such event held by the Japanese Bureau of Tourism, Culture, and Trade in Taiwan, AKB48 members Minami Takahashi, Saya Kawamoto, and Mion Kukaichi made a special appearance to announce a brand new round of auditions seeking to add Taiwanese members to the pop idol groups already impressive line-up.
During the press conference it was noted that Taiwanese resident between the ages of 11 and 23 are eligible to apply with additional details and requirements posted on the AKB48 website today. Takahashi shares “As part of the inaugural class, I danced to music with high spirits, I had a tough time remembering all the choreography because it was difficult. So, the dance instructor gave me some advice… just yell “HEY!” at the end of the song with all your heart. I passed the exam after that. Even if you can’t dance or sing well not, just work really hard and I’m sure you can do it.”
Kawamoto relates “The final audition made me incredibly nervous, we had to perform in front of our seniors and we did our best and now we’re members of AKB48. So, everyone who plans to audition, go forward with all your might and work hard!” Mukaichi offers some encouragement “I hope that everyone in Taiwan will be willing to take the challenge with a smile!”
Application deadline ends on May 16th and will be accepted on the web, by mail, and at the AKB48 Official Goods Shop Taiwan. Selection process will include application review, call for first round successful applicants, audition at AKB48 Theater in Tokyo, and finally acceptance into AKB48. Nogizaka46 [乃木坂46], created by producer Yasushi Akimoto, is famously known as AKB48’s official rivals. Nogizaka46 made their debut in 2012 releasing a total of 8 singles since then with their second single Oide Shampoo hitting the top of the weekly Oricon Charts. In recent history the group is most famously known for singing Tsuki no Ookisa [月の大きさ] the opening theme for Naruto: Shippuuden. As of June 2014 Nogizaka46 consists of 34 regular members and 9 understudies (kenkyusei).
AKB48 is a Japanese idol girl group named after the Akihabara area of Tokyo where the group’s primary theater is located. AKB48′s producer, Yasushi Akimoto, had envisioned the group as the girl next door and sought to form a group with their own theatre featuring daily performances in order for fans to see shows year-round. The concept of “idols you can meet” evolved into a rotating roster of teams and sister groups able to hold simultaneous performances at events around Japan and the world with the recent expansion of AKB48′s international sister groups in China and Indonesia.
The group is one of the highest-earning musical performers in Japan, with 2013 sales of over $128 million, and has been characterized as a social phenomenon. As of March 2014 the group has sold over 30 million records, including over 28.78 million singles as of May 2014, the second-highest musical act in Japan in the number of singles sold and the highest by a girl group. AKB48′s twenty-three latest singles have topped the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart, with a record twenty singles selling over a million copies.
